Hey Guys and Gals,
A few weeks ago I visited Mission San Luis, in Tallahassee, with my friends from FPAN West Central. It was a fun trip, and I really enjoyed learning more about Florida’s early Spanish settlers, as well as the Native Americans who also called the mission home!
Above is a picture of me in the Council House at Mission San Luis. The original one was destroyed long ago, but based on what they learned from their excavations at the site archaeologists were able to reconstruct the building to look much the same as it did when the Apalachee used it as a city hall and ceremonial center several hundred years ago. To learn more about the history of Mission San Luis check out their website!
Here is a picture of one of the artifacts archaeologists found at Mission San Luis, a gopher tortoise shell! Hopefully this wasn’t one of my ancestors because the residents of the mission ate gopher tortoises, along with domesticated animals like pigs and cows, as part of their diet.
On their website you can also view some of the artifacts that archaeologists have found at the site. Even if you can’t make it to Tallahassee to see Mission San Luis in person you can still learn more about the exciting archaeological finds there online!
