Miami

A small Civil War veteran plot was established in one of two traffic circles on the east-west road that passes through the City of Miami Cemetery.  This plot is reserved for the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

A total of 19 marked graves are in the soldiers plot around the monument. These are the final resting places of Confederate veterans who moved to Florida following the Civil War from places including Georgia, North Carolina, and Kentucky. The few markers that show year of birth show that in late 1960, when South Carolina seceeded from the Union, these veterans ranged between 11 and 28 years of age--regardless of when they served, some of these were very young soldiers.

A monument that once stood on the grounds of the Dade County Courthouse (see Monuments section for more information) was moved to Confederate Circle in the cemetery in 1927.  Some time after that, a hurricane toppled the large obelisk from its base and caused it to fracture.  It was never replaced and all that remains is the base.
