Steam piston that powered the mill
This single steam piston used steam from the nearby boiler to power the rollers to process sugar cane. Pistons like this were the workhorse of the mid-nineteenth century and were used to power a wide variety of mills and steamboats. (Photo by William Lees, FPAN, August 2007)
