Pensacola (3) |

Fort Pickens and Fort Barrancas were constructed to help protect Pensacola Bay and its civilian and military resources from seaborne attack. At the outset of the Civil War, these forts--Barrancas occupied by the Confederacy and Pickens by the United States--became a flash point as significant as Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Sumter surrendered, but Pickens never did and eventually this led to the abandonement of Pensacola by the Confederacy. These forts stand as among the most significant places from the Civil War in Florida.
