Chattahoochee

1994

CSS Chattahoochee

County Road 269 (Main) just south of US Highway 90 in Chattahoochee

This monument was placed near the location of the graves of the sailors killed in a boiler explosion aboard the CSS Chattahoochee at Blountstown on the Apalachicola River, May 27, 1863.  The 17 sailors killed were buried in Chattahoochee the next day in a grave that is no longer marked and whose location is not precisely known.

The CSS Chattahoochee returned to service, and was eventually scuttled by Confederate forces in 1865 in Columbus, Georgia.  A portion of the vessel was raised in the mid-1960s, during the Civil War Centennial, and is now on display at the National Naval Civil War Museum in Columbus.
