Confederate Monument, Veterans Park

2006

Corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th St.

This is a recent addition to Veterans Park, erected in 2008.  It was erected by the Jacob Summerlin Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and is a granite obelisk that sits on a a circular multi-color brickwork platform designed as a depiction of the Southern Cross of Honor.

The obelisk carries a number of quotes on its base, and the obelisk itself is engraved with numerous names.  It is not at all clear from this monument what these names represent--whether they are Confederate veterans or the names of current members of the local camp of the SCV.  More word on that later.
