Pensacola (3) |

In early 1861 Pensacola was at the center of national attention because the U.S. garrison at Fort Pickens refused to surrender. Unlike Fort Sumter, the U.S. garrison at Pickens never surrendered leading to the eventual abandonment of Pensacola by Confederate forces. Once in Union hands, Pensacola became an important base of operations on the Gulf Coast.
