Indian River County was created in 1925. It was named for the Indian River Lagoon, which runs through the eastern portion of the county. Previously this area was considered part of St. Lucie County. Prior to 1820 this area was known as the Territory of East Florida. It is home to numerous nature and wildlife organizations that celebrate and protect the county’s beautiful coastlines.
