The Northwest Region of the Florida Public Archaeology Network is hosted by the University of West Florida in Pensacola, and is based in the historic L&N Marine Terminal at 207 East Main Street. The Northwest Region shares offices with the Network Coordinating Center, Dr. William Lees, Director, and Mrs. Cheryl Phelps, Office & Grants Manager.

Dr. Della Scott-IretonDr. Della Scott-Ireton graduated from the University of West Florida with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology and a Master's degree in Historical Archaeology. She also has a Master's in International Relations from Troy University, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Florida State University. Della is certified as a Scuba Instructor with the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI). She worked with the Pensacola Shipwreck Survey, West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc., Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research, and the government of the Cayman Islands before joining the Florida Public Archaeology Network (www.flpublicarchaeology.org) where she serves as the Northwest Region Director. Della is an officer and elected board member of the Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology and is a member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists. Della's research interests include public interpretation of maritime cultural resources, both on land and under water, and training of avocationals in archaeological methods and practices.

Mary FurlongMary Furlong graduated from the University of Mississippi with Bachelor's degrees in both Anthropology and History. While in Mississippi, she got her first taste of archaeology at the Parchman Mound Site near Clarksdale, MS. Wanting to combine her interests in history and anthropology, Mary then enrolled in the University of West Florida, where she is currently working on her Master's degree in historical archaeology. Before joining the Network, Mary participated in a variety of public archaeological excavations and outreach projects with the University of West Florida. In addition, Mary spent several years as a guide and public interpreter for West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc. and continues work with the Saint Michael's Cemetery Foundation to protect and interpret the archaeology of the cemetery.

FPAN IntersLarry B. James, Jr received his B.A. in American History from the College of Charleston located his native town of Charleston, SC. His undergraduate studies included a minor degree in Anthropology, with an Archaeological focus. His interest in Archaeology was ignited when he received a scholarship from the Archeological Society of Charleston to attend a seminar and expedition at the Topper Site located in Allendale, SC, with the Institute of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of South Carolina. Larry also volunteered with archaeologists at South Carolina’s Colonial Dorchester State Park and participated as an assistant with the Discover Carolina Program teaching children Archaeology. In 2005, Larry relocated to Pensacola and began his academic career in pursuit of a Master’s degree in Anthropology at the University of West Florida. From the spring of 2006 to the present, Larry participated in several projects including: backlogging NPS artifacts from Santa Rosa Island, completing the 2006 and 2007 UWF field schools, and several compliance projects with UWF’s Archaeology Institute. His graduate thesis work will focus on the British Period of Pensacola’s history (1763-1783) and he has decided to examine the Revolutionary War Siege of Pensacola as a focal point of his project.

Irina T. Franklin is an incoming graduate student in the Historical Archaeology program at the University of West Florida. She received the Florida Public Archaeology Network Student Fellowship, and will be working closely with FPAN for the next three years while she completes her degree. Irina is looking forward to developing interpretive literature, promoting the conservation of terrestrial and maritime sites, and sharing archaeology with the local community. In 2004, she participated in UWF’s combined maritime and terrestrial field school. Irina received her B.S. in Anthropology from Florida State University in 2006. While living in Tallahassee she worked for the State of Florida’s Bureau of Archaeological Research. A native of Pensacola, Irina is excited to return and continue her education with UWF and FPAN. During the summers of 2006 & 2007 Irina worked with Fernbank Museum of Natural History's Public Archaeology Program.
