CGCAS presents Dr. Gabrielle Vail: Recreating the CosmosTime: 7:00 pm til 8:00 pm Location: Weedon lsland Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center, 1800 Weedon Drive NE, St. Pete Description: Re-Creating the Cosmos: Cycles of Time and Creation in Prehispanic Maya Texts: This presentation explores Maya creation stories and their re-enactments in the form of world renewal ceremonies, based on information in Classic and Postclassic (3rd through 15th centuries) painted books, ceramics, murals, carved stone monuments, and architectural features. This analysis demonstrates that, although December 21, 2012 represents the end of a long cycle of time for the Maya, it was mentioned only rarely and was not integral to their understanding of cycles of world destruction and creation.
