March is Florida Archaeology Month!

The Way We Were: Florida's Forts, Frontiers, and Families

Bring the whole family to learn about Florida's pioneer days. Our center will have hands on activities that will teach you about archaeology and how people lived during the late 1800's to early 1900's. Each place we visit will highlight a different aspect of that time period.

Saturday, March 8th, 10am until 4pm - Fort Foster

Located at Hillsborough River State Park, Fort Foster is a replica wood picket style fort. There will be tours of the fort as well as hands on activities planned. Free to the public.

Saturday, March 15th, Noon - 2pm - South Florida Museum

Learn how to make a compass and use a map to scavenge for clues about Florida's frontier days. Activities are included in the price of admission to the South Florida museum. For more details, visit their web site at http://www.southfloridamuseum.org/default.asp.

Saturday, March 22nd, 9:30am until 4:30pm - 1876 Cow Camp

Come visit Lake Kissimmee State Park's 1876 Cow Camp and learn all about Florida's cowboy heritage with this living history example of a cow camp, complete with Florida cows! Well worth the $4 per car.

Saturday, March 29th, 10am until 4pm - Fort Chokonikla

Paynes Creek Historic State Park will be hosting archaeological activities where this fort and trading post once stood. Please come out and see the visitor's center as well. Free to the public.
